Haven Acres originated from farmland that was purchased from W. C. Moore in the late 60’s. In the early 70’s the Northeast Mississippi Development Company began developing this subdivision. Haven Acres is located on a 265-acre tact of land, southwest of Tupelo and near Verona.

This was the 1st project of its kind in Northeast Mississippi. A total of 65 homes were completed for the opening of the new subdivision. The first family to purchase a home in the community was that of Mr. Pill Edwards. There are now over 300 homes in the neighborhood and it's still growing.

Haven Acres started out as a dream and the dream is continuing to improve. We are also looking for new opportunities for our community.

As the community began to grow churches were added. Church services began in different homes. Later Morning Star MB Church was founded. Now there are three places to worship: Morning Star Church, The Shammach Church of God In Christ, and The Global Pacific Center.

In 1996 - the City of Tupelo and Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks built a community park on land donated by Mr. O’Neal Oliver.

The Community was determined and worked hard together for many years to develop and plan a

community Center. In 1998 after all the years of dreaming, the dream finally was coming true - land was being cleared off to be the community center site. Grants were added to help clean the community

up and start the building of the Community Center. Ms. Mattie Mabry was the President of the Neighborhood Association at the time. She worked long and hard with several others on the Neighborhood Committee.

Finally in 2001 Ms Mattie said "I thank God for this Day",  the ground was broken for the Center and construction began. The building was completed the same year. This Neighborhood Center now houses The Boys and Girls Club, Lift Headstart as well as community activities.

Haven Acres is still growing and improving the community. We now have several small businesses and looking for more to develop. Located in the neighborhood is a Laundromat, a Barber Shop and several Beauty Shops. There is a Restaurant along with a Neighborhood Tax Office.

  • In 1999 the area became the official Weed and Seed neighborhood helping to put an end to crime in the neighborhood.

  • Haven Acres has been in the spotlight on several occasions in 2003

    • The city and  a resident of the community received the James C. Howland Gold Award at a Conference in Nashville.

    • We received the City Spirit Award from the Mississippi Municipal League.

    • The Jefferson Award was also given to a member of the neighborhood, Ms. Evelyn Matthews, for her outstanding work is the area.

Events & News

On National Night Out, Tuesday, August 5, 2008, some neighborhoods showed unity in keeping crime out of their communities. Haven Acres was one of those communities as they held their annual cookout. They served hotdogs, played games, and gave out Back-To-School supplies to kids for the upcoming school year. Several residents came out to volunteer as well as fellowship with one another.
