What is NAYC?
NAYC stands for
Neighborhood Associations Youth Council after the city's
original Neighborhood Associations Council (NAC). It is
the brain child of a partnership with the NAC and
our local Neighborhood Development Corporation
(NDC) with NeighborWorks.
The 2007 class of residents attending the NeighborWorks
Community Leadership Institute in Baltimore MD wanted to
create a new energy and enthusiasm in Tupelo by
involving youth in our neighborhood associations,
community at-large, and assist in developing their
leadership potential. Members of the class include Zell
Long, executive director of NDC; Nathan Duncan,
president of NDC; Sam Holland, president of Resident
Leadership Committee (Team Tupelo); Teena King, Haven
Acres; Leslie Mart, Joyner; Kathy Duncan, Historic
Downtown "Mill Village"; Madie Morton, Wilemon Acres;
and Darren Fenton, Neighborhood Planner.

This 2008 class
includes; Darren
Fenton, Neighborhood Planner; Stacey Gregory, Mill
Village of Historic Downtown; Zell Long, Executive
Director of Neighborhood Development Corporation; Sam
Holland, Chairman of the Resident Leadership Committee
(Team Tupelo); Chris Holland, Neighborhood Associations
Youth Council; and Jade McIntosh, president of the NAYC
all attended the Community Leadership Institute in New
Orleans.
Youth are an integral
part of every community. If they are not involved, they
don't feel that their issues are important, which
usually results in increased youth criminal
activity in neighborhoods. There is a lack of future
leaders within the community. Formation and
participation in the NAYC will give youth:
-
a V-oice in
decision-making
-
an O-wnership in the
community
-
a T-ool to become
future leader
-
and E-ducate them
about issues in their community
Goal: Give Youth a
VOTE!
When does the NAYC Meet?
First Sunday of the month at 3:00 p.m. The group usually
meets at the CREATE building, however they may meet
occasionally at City Hall.
What Does the NAYC Do?
The NAYC work in the
community is similar to the functions of the Neighborhood
Associations Council (NAC). They work on projects
primarily to improve the Quality of Life for the City of
Tupelo. They are civic-minded in observing the function
of our city government, and departments. They are active
in participating in projects such as beautification,
volunteering, and developing their own projects they
feel are important towards bring the voice of the youth
to the community.

What's New?
As the new
school year has started some of our members have moved
on. At this time we would like to congratulate Jade
McIntosh. She served as our inaugural president and did
a wonderful job of representing the NAYC, and the City.
She will be attending Ole Miss this fall and we wish her

UPDATE!
“What
Does Green Mean For Tupelo?”
The Comprehensive Plan
now being drafted is going to focus on ways we can grow that will
reduce the community’s energy needs. The plan is going to
provide us with more choices for places to live, shop, and
work where we won’t have to drive as far. This is a
meaningful way we as a community can have a positive effect
on the environment. The plan also includes an emphasis on
what is called ‘green infrastructure’: the parks, trails,
and sidewalks that make a city environment pleasant and
livable.
Adapting our local economy to use less energy is going to
create business opportunities as well. Toyota’s decision to
bring Prius production to their Blue Springs plant will give
us an opening into the growth sector of energy-efficient
technology. These exciting prospects will be discussed at
the August 25 Plan
Forum, to be held at the
Lee County Library From 6 To 8 p.m.
