History and Heritage
In area, Presley Heights is the largest of
the local neighborhoods in Tupelo. Originally Long Town, it
was later chartered as the town of East Tupelo, Mississippi.
It had established businesses, churches, and East Tupelo
High School, now known as Lawhon Elementary School. In the
mid 1940’s East Tupelo merged with the town of Tupelo, and
still later it became known as East Heights.
East Heights was renamed Presley Heights after Elvis
Presley. His birthplace is located on Elvis Presley Drive in
Presley Heights, and is one of the most visited sites in
Tupelo.
Parks
Presley Heights is also home to Veteran’s
Memorial Park, where citizens can be found fishing in its
lakes, playing disc golf, walking along its streets and
walking tracks, roller-blading, riding bicycles. and playing
at the new splash pad. Veterans Park is
well designed for these activities and many families take
the opportunity to enjoy them, especially during the summer
months. Baseball and softball facilities are also located at
Veteran’s Park. As its name indicates, Veteran’s Memorial
Park is home to The "Avenue of Flags" & The "Veterans
Memorial" which was dedicated May 26, 2008, Memorial
Day. A fitting and impressive memorial
honoring all Veterans who have served our
country in the Armed Forces. Tupelo Parks and Recreation
Department has more information at
