Willis Heights Neighborhood History Vignettes

"We could see fires in the nearby area and were told by passerby's that the high school was on fire. Sixteen people were killed on my street (Park) between Frisco Railroad and Main Street. Harrisburg Baptist church in Willis Heights was completely destroyed."

From: djournal.com 4/4/2006 Tornado Stories - About the 1936 Tornado
From Claude Duke, 534 Chesterville Road
A personal account by Elizabeth Barnes Duke

Back in September 1933 a group of believers met at Rankin School to organize a Missionary Baptist Church. On 4 April 1936, just two years after construction had begun on the house of worship, the last bill was paid on the building. The very next day a tornado completely destroyed it. The small congregation, great in faith, succeeded in rebuilding the church that same year. By 1941 the church had 138 members. By 1944 the membership had grown to 211, in 1948 to more than 500.

In 1982 when its 50th Anniversary was celebrated, Harrisburg Baptist Church had a resident membership of nearly 1,800 at its 1800 West Main Street location.

WHNA first meet here. Now the former Harrisburg Baptist Church Building has been re-commissioned as "The Link Center". The Link Centre serves as Northeast Mississippi's premier regional and cultural service center, offering a variety of experiences and services. Located at the Link Centre are the American Cancer Society, El Centro, Girl Scouts, and the Salvation Army After-School Program. This agency is your one-stop center for information and support.

On the cultural side, the Link Centre is home to the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra and other offerings of fine arts and cultural events ranging from children's music lessons to performances by the Tupelo Symphony and others in our 500-seat concert hall or our flexible reception space.

It is located at 1800 West Main Street, at the North end of Enoch Avenue.

The only Elvis story I can swear to is one I heard from my sister. She and Elvis were classmates at Milam Junior High. One day she came home from school and Mother asked her, “What happened in school today, Linda?” and she answered, “Oh, nothing. Elvis brought his guitar again.” Seems she didn’t think much of him and his guitar.

As an adult, Linda lived in a little house in Willis Heights. Across the street was a Civil War memorial — a cannon, if memory serves me right. If I’m wrong ... well, it’s a cannon now. And in my book it serves as a symbol of the domestic war between two of the characters who lived in the house where my sister once lived.

Well, the neighborhood association is working hard to make the area a nice and safe place to live."
